History of Olive Branch Baptist Church
Erected in 1857, the Olive Branch Baptist Church
building has undergone many physical changes, inside and out. For those
who dwell within, the love and enthusiasm for serving God remains steadfast.
As the church family grew, the need
for more space was obvious. In 1948, work began on adding a second -
story above the dining room and kitchen to serve as Sunday School rooms.
Mr. William McNutt's woodworking class at Rostraver High School built
the belfry as a gift to the church. A new baptistry was also added.
In 1952, ground was broken for a new parsonage. The year 1956 marked
the establishment of the first Church Library. It was also the first
year for Vacation Bible School - a tradition which continues today.
After the incorporation
of Olive Branch in May, 1957, plans were adopted to add an annex to
the original church building, adding space for classrooms and a Fellowship
Hall. After completion of the annex, folding doors were used to subdivide
the rooms into Sunday School classrooms, adding bathrooms and a more
modern kitchen. Concrete sidewalks were added along with landscaping
and new shrubbery around the building.
In January of 1964, the Board of Christian
Education was elected for the first time. They were Milton Roberts as
Chairman, with Mrs.Helen McNutt, Robert Henderson, Sara Sleasman, Charlotte
Sadler and Naomi Coughenour.
In 1959 a nursery was added on a trial
basis and continues today. In 1972, ground breaking for the Christian
Education Annex took place and in 1975 the Abiding Memorial Fund Committee
was established as a permanent committee.
In the year 2000, the original church building
underwent a makeover. The entire area was gutted and redone. Since then,
many other projects have been complete. Fresh paint, carpeting, tiling
and paving of the parking lot have been done. Sadly the huge maple trees
in the front lawn had to be removed. In June of 2007, the old shrubbery
was removed and replaced with new plants and shrubs.
The year 2007 was a celebration of OBBC's 150th anniversary. During
this celebration of 150 years, we have come to realize the importance
of our past. Our ancestors worked very hard to follow God's word as
we do today. The goal of Olive Branch Baptist Church is to touch the
future in ways that God leads us. We will look to him in all manners
of our church life and trust that He will show us how to Touch the Future.
"I
press toward the goal for the prize of the upward
call of God in Jesus Christ."
